There is a lot that can go wrong in an animated feature. When writing for kids authors tend to lower the intelligence value of the work in the hopes that kids are going to soak it up forgetting that kids today are smarter than they were 50 years ago and that easily bored adults are going to have to sit through the feature as well. Monster House, directed by Gil Kenan actually manages to entertain and respect it's audiences giving them a little something more than a kid flick. It's thrilling, it's intelligent, and most of all it's funny.

DJ is a misunderstood kid who has a creepy habbit of keeping tabs on the cruel doings of the crotchety Mr. Nebbercracker who lives across the street in a two story, run down, house. Nebbercracker is very protective of his house and lawn, screaming vile threats at anyone coming near, and taking any toy or item that has the misfortune of landing on his property. After DJ and his friend Chowder accidently get the old man so riled up that he has a heart attack and is carried away in a sirenless ambulence things really start to get weird as the house seems to take on a life of it's own. They soon discover the house is possessed and eating anyone that comes near, pulling them in with a long tongue of carpet. With the help of intelligent student Jenny they must find a way to enter the house and destroy the "heart" of the beast before Halloween Night. Trick or Treaters can be very tasty.

This came off as a plot right out of a RL. Stein Goosebump novel; Horror directed to younger audiences. At times you might even find yourself surprised on how morbid the film actually gets. It's a house that eats people and it's very vicious about it. There is no blood of course, but there is still a lot of screaming and freaking out. Again this shows that the film caters to children, knowing full well they are capable of handling this degree of thrills. It's also as much of an adventure as it is a horror, and there is a mystery to be solved here. There is plenty to keep the kiddo's entertained for an hour and a half and then talking non-stop about for hours afterwards. But the best part is; the adults are going to react to it the same way as well.

You'll find a few big names in the cast list, such as Steve Buscemi as the voice of Nebbercracker, Jason Lee as Bones, and Jon Heder as Reginald "Skull" Skulinski. For the role of the kids they actually cast real kids surprisingly. Mitchel Musso leads the pack as DJ, Sam Lerner plays Chowder, and Spencer Locke is the adorable Jenny. Of them I would say my favorite is Jenny, who gives credit to the average intelligence of pre-teens. Her best bit comes early as she is selling candy door to door and goes from Parent Mode to "Baby-Sitter with Emergency Money" mode. I also have to give Jon Heder some credit, as even though he plays the same character he always plays, he at least looks alot different in animated form. And while it doesn't exactly have a voice, you have to acknowledge that the House itself is a fantastic character. It's vile and devious, and you have to respect that from a movie's villain.

The film was done as a motion capture project, meaning that not only did the actors provide the voices to their characters, but they were also hooked up to a bunch of sensors and then moved around in character while a computer recorded the movements and used them as the framework for the animation. It's the same process that went into "The Polar Express" a few years ago, but this time the characters look more cartoony. Everything is absolutely beautiful and there is no end to the details that were put into every shot.

Overall there are little complaints I could possibly have about "Monster House". Sometimes characters act a little too goofy considering the situations they might be in, and somehow I can't possibly understand how the entire neighborhood could  be oblivious to the house and the crazy stuff that happens right out in the front lawn in broad daylight. Minor issues though, as they hardly take away from your ability to sit down and enjoy the film from start to finish, laughing the entire way. Whether or not you have kids is not the issue when it comes to this film. You were a kid once and that's all it takes to relate.  "Monster House" is a monster of a good time.
