In this film by Lars Von Trier ("Dogville" and "Dancer in the Dark"), we explore a 1930s southern plantation named "Manderlay" where the Civil War seems to have never happened. Slaves are still kept, whipped, and oppressed as property within the gates. Bryce Dallas Howard ("The Village") stars as Grace, the daughter of prejudiced gangster Willem Dafoe ("Spider-Man" and "Born on the Fourth of July"). Grace has very progressive ideas about how the world works and is appalled when she comes across Manderlay. She reaches out to the leader of the slaves, Danny Glover ("The Color Purple" and the "Lethal Weapon" movies) to help free the poor oppressed men and women there after the death of the plantation and slave owner Mam, played by legendary actress Lauren Bacall ("How to Marry a Millionaire" and "Murder on the Orient Express").Grace is hopelessly optimistic about the ability of these freed slaves to ease into free living. Having her father leave her behind to oversee the beginning of their integration into liberated life and normal society, Grace tries to direct, counsel, educate, and organize the men, women, and children who fear life outside the gates of the home they have known all their lives. Along the way from spring to the cotton harvest, Grace sees much fault in her logic and idealism. Among her mistakes are cutting down trees that shielded the crops from dust storms, teaching justice to have it backfire in her own face when the time comes that a wrong is done among the group, and trusting that all is as it seems in this world she knows and understands absolutely nothing about but deems reprehensible and seeks to right at any cost. While there is plenty of good cause to see this story through, viewers may find it extremely difficult to make it through the entire thing. At an approximate two and a half hours, the movie runs very long and drags in places. The story is not the problem though. The plot itself, the underlying themes about growing accustomed to imprisonment and trying to force free will on lifelong prisoners, is intriguing and gets its point across well. But, in an innovative move, the entire film takes place on a soundstage that is set up like a stage so the movie feels much more like a minimalistic play. The set is barren, empty, and has designated boundaries, much like the messages beneath the surface of this rescue attempt gone mad. It's an interesting play on the material and a very different approach to the telling of it, but with the heavy mood, dark surroundings, and lack of production values, this movie does not have enough to capture the attention of a wide audience with its uniquely slanted take on the place that the abolition movement forgot. As Grace takes on that roll of the last abolitionist, the setting or lack thereof works for the symbolism but detracts from the appeal.Personally, I would have rather seen this story done as a larger scale picture with any budget that could have filled those gaps with a more compelling background, and in that, eliminating it as a foreground issue and expanding upon the horizons of viewers who would take an interest rather than see this as a play caught on film with little to compel the imagination into this desolate environment. If this film had been much shorter, this would probably not have been such an issue for me. Though it will not be a problem for some, it will certainly be a blow to the effectiveness of the movie as a whole for others. It is a very daring format and direction, but it took away from my ability to enjoy this film as a whole. With performances from some wonderful talent, including Isaach De Bankole ("The Killing Zone" and "Miami Vice") in a major role as the object of Grace's lustful desires and Chloe Sevigny ("Kids" and "Boys Don't Cry") in a small part, there are great performances that are half the reason to see this movie. The other and foremost half is the subject matter and the startling and unsettling turn of events and what the end has to offer about the psychological and sociological repercussions of these sad and disturbing circumstances. Unless you are deeply interested in such issues or the talent involved, this is probably not one you would want to take the time to see.
